Sights you should visit

Museums

For all of you who are interested in culture, we recommend visiting one of the following museums. The Menelaos Parlamas Museum of Rural Life, the Lychnostatis Museum, the archaeological site of Malia and the Argirakio War Ethnological Museum are all within walking distance from Hersonissos and you will surely find interesting exhibits and information.

Churches & Monasteries

Like the rest of Crete, there are also many churches and monasteries in Hersonissos. You will find dozens, beautiful churches and chapels from the 11th to the 16th century AD. The monasteries are also of great interest, as the architecture and hagiography that visitors can admire will leave them all fascinated.

Knossos

Knossos is the most important archaeological site of Crete with millions of visitors each year. The Minoan palace is located in Heraklion, built on the hill of Kefalas. It was the base of King Minos and well-known myths such as the Minotaur, or Daidalos with Icarus are connected to the palace. The first excavations were carried out in 1878 by Minoas Kalokerinos and continued in 1900-1903 by Sir Arthur Evans, who brought the entire palace to light.

Nikos Kazantzakis Grave

The tomb of the great Cretan writer Nikos Kazantzakis is at the top of Heraklion, at the Martinenego bastion. On the marble tomb there is an inscription in the well-known phrase of the writer: “I hope nothing, I fear nothing, I am free”, and a large wooden cross. From that point, you can also enjoy the wonderful panoramic view of Heraklion.

Activities

Hersonissos, due to its intense tourism, offers visitors the opportunity to engage in many activities. You can do water sports (all kinds of watersports are available in Hersonissos), diving, horse riding, play tennis or golf, or even try paragliding. Find out what you like and have fun with your friends or family.

Beaches

Crete is famous for the beautiful beaches with its crystal blue waters. If you do not want to leave Hersonissos, select Limanakia, or the organized beaches of Silva Maris and Star Beach. However, throughout Crete there are wonderful beaches worth visiting, such as Vai, Balos, Preveli, Elafonisi, Falasarna, Agiofarago, Kedrodasos. Do not be afraid of the distance, the result will not betray the effort!
